Why visit

The official site presents a visit as a journey six million years in the making.

At Hualapai Point, inside Grand Canyon West, overnight stays are offered alongside horseback riding and meals by the fire. The point also has a zipline that spans 1,100 feet across the canyon walls.

Colorado River rafting launches from Peach Springs, Arizona, with Hualapai guides. Peach Springs, described as the gateway to that rafting, is about a 2-hour drive from the site.

When to go

From June through September, Arizona's lower elevations see dry heat of 90 to 120 °F (32 to 49 °C). That is a statewide figure and not one specific to Grand Canyon West.

Monsoon downpours across Arizona often bring flash floods, and those floods can turn deadly.

Admission and facilities

Entry to Grand Canyon West runs through the Sunset Pass, and that pass gives entrance only after 3:00 PM. Entry through the pass also covers the Skywalk.

Facilities listed for the site include a visitor center, cabins, restaurants and a zipline. Food options are available on site.

Development history

Tours led by tribal members were the original offering when the site was founded in 1988, alongside a dirt airport.

The Hualapai tribe put a solar microgrid with battery storage in place in 2023, with the stated aim of reducing diesel use.

Not all Hualapai members backed the project. Some objected that it disturbed sacred ground.

Climate and clock time

The top third of Arizona is a plateau at higher altitude. Winters there are cold and summers are mild, though the climate across the state stays semiarid to arid.

The record for the state is 128 °F (53 °C), reached at Lake Havasu City on June 29, 1994 and on July 5, 2007.

Clock times for sunrise and sunset do not shift with the seasons in Arizona, which does not observe Daylight Saving Time. The Navajo Nation in the northeast of the state is the exception.
